Both in Greece and Albania it is now clear that the problems in providing public health services that have plagued the economy and society are common and focus on:

(i) High cost on medical procedures and medication

(ii) Incomplete management of the patient from the system

(iii) Poor management of medical records.

Heart diseases are the most common cause of death in the area and the question is: Can ICT and cross border cooperation provide a framework for addressing and solving these problems?

The consortium believes that information technology can play a key role in improving efficiency in the health sector and more specifically in cardiology.

Better health care provision for patients suffering from heart-related problems is the main aim of the project.

telecardiology project

About the project

A system where the cornerstone will be the cardiology electronic health record and the cardiologists' collaboration platform for exchange of data and provision of telemedicine services is proposed.

The Cardiology Department of the General Hospital "G. Hatzikostas" of Ioannina will act as mentor in this partnership since it is the more appropriate clinic to operate such a system to be a pillar of the wider adoption.

The respective Cardiology Department in Gjirokaster Regional Hospital "Omer Nishani" will further develop its expertise and knowledge in the field.

The University of Ioannina (which is also the Leader partner for the whole project) will develop the necessary software, always in close collaboration and with the necessary contributions from the clinical partners involved.

The objectives of the project can be summarized as follows:

  • Increase the quality of health service provision both to local and to moving population suffering from cardiovascular diseases through the implementation, adoption and use of disease specific EHR

  • Interconnect Health Care Professionals (HCPs), specifically cardiologists, through the development of a collaborative platform for tele-consulting and exchange of expertise and experiences
